Everything you need to know about travelling with your pet.
Travelling with your pet can be stressing for both: you and your pet. New surrounding, new voices and the necessity to stay in a travel crate for a longer time always makes our little four-legged friends anxious. How to prepare you pet for longer travels? We came up with travel advice that will help you prepare your pets for their move and help us with the service itself as well.
Some animals are frequent travellers and don't mind spending a lot of time in a vehicle. But there are pets (the big ones and the small ones like hamsters or mice) that are scared of journeys and can even scratch or bite their owner before entering the car.
You should try to help your pet become accustomed to travelling, even short trips are useful. Provide positive reinforcement and transport you pet for a walk to the woods using you car. So it won't think about visit to the vet when it sees the travel crate. And never force your pet into the crate. Take more time and help your animal adjust to it. You can for example leave the crate open in the room and allow your animal walk freely into it whenever it feels like. Put a blanket inside or a thing that your cat or dog is familiar with, like a toy or something.
You should also keep in mind the fact that not everyone likes animals and won't be happy when travelling with them. So most of the travel companies do not allow pet travels without special crates or a dog without a muzzle and a lead on. It should be well fitted and comfortable for the animal. Smaller dogs are allowed to travel in special crates or bags, of course on shorter routes.
When we are travelling with smaller pets, like hamsters, we also need to use special crate for our little friends. It should be filled with some old and new pad so your animal feels a little bit like home. Remember that you are not allowed to use old boxes or plastic containers with self-made holes.
Ensure you have your pets veterinary record together with vaccination record which is up to date. We can be denied travelling without proper vet documents. Always make sure that your pet drinks a lot of water and is well hydrated. Take with you specially designed basin for small or big animals. For smaller pets a piece of fruit should be enough.
Always have tissues or little towels in order to clean after your pet. You can buy special travel kit for animals. It is worth remembering that animals can suffer from travel sickness. Do not feed your pet a full meal within 5-8 hours before the trip as this may cause an upset stomach. Ensure to take a proper walk with your pet before the travel.
On longer routes you should take a cuvette and a cat litter. Dogs usually do no need stops more than very 2-3 hours, so keep in mind the fact that the driver is not always able to make a pause whenever you want. That is why always walk your pet out during every stop on route. Ensure yo have proper packaging for animal fouling.
Ensure you attach a label with your address on it in case your pet gets away. It has happened before that during a stop few animals escaped their owners, because they were scared of the new surrounding.
For safety reasons do not allow your pet to lean over an open window during the travel.
If your pet suffers from a serious travel sickness you should contact your vet and sedate your animal. Remember about the dose and time you should use the sedatives.
In most cases the owner is more stressed than the pet, but during longer travels anything can happen so be sure you are prepared for it!
